Greetings!

Over the years, the CTA and its partners, Fellows and affiliated organizations, have had a major impact on practice, programs and policy in a variety of communities. In ways we least expect, we learn about how our work has influenced professionals, community leaders, and, through them, many others. In this Newsletter, we will feature the work of some of our international partners and colleagues.

We continue to revise our web-based resources including our new website, www.ChildTraumaAcademy.org, and expand our web- capabilities. For the next few months, we will continue to use www.ChildTrauma.org site but over time, we will be transitioning our new content to the new, more user-friendly site.

As always, we appreciate the positive - and not-so- positive constructive feedback we receive from from our previous Newsletters. We look forward to your comments on this Newsletter. We will continue to work hard to provide useful and timely information to help you continue to better understand and serve high risk children and their families.

WAVE Trust: Addressing the Root Causes of Violence

Worldwide Alternatives to Violence, WAVE, is an international charity dedicated to reducing child abuse and interpersonal violence through understanding its root causes. WAVE's particular focus is the reduction of child abuse and neglect, before it occurs, as it is the root cause of violent behavior in teenagers and adults, and it underlies much emotional suffering in children and adults who may never be violent.

George Hosking, the Founder of WAVE, has been very effective in the UK in bringing these key issues to the attention of policymakers and professionals. The most recent very successful effort was a "Think Tank" held last year. Dr. Perry was able to participate by sharing a video presentation. Reports on WAVE's research and on the Think Tank are available on their website (see below).

George spent time in the US this month meeting with various organizations and individuals with a common vision for addressing child abuse. George met with the CTA Leadership Team and later came with Dr. Perry to several presentations in California. We look forward to further discussions regarding potential joint projects and activities.

ONE Nottingham: Creating a Child Respectful Community

Graham Allen, the MP for Nottingham, is seen in the attached photo meeting with Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of the UK. He has been leading a very ambitious, important community process to make Nottingham the healthiest, most productive, most creative environment to live and raise children. The brain images in his hands are from work by Dr. Perry and the CTA.

The key to this ambitious goal, he recognizes, is creating healthy, safe and enriching environments for all children. To this end, ONE Nottingham seeks "to emphasize wherever possible; prevention, pre- emption and intervention to realise our vision." At the heart of this effort is work conducted by the CTA and others regarding the adverse impact of abuse, neglect, chaos and violence on the developing child. George Hosking has played a key role in helping policymakers in the UK, such as Graham Allen, learn the key research and promising programs which can help make the vision of ONE Nottingham come to fruition.

In March, Graham will be visiting Texas with other members of Parliament. He will meet with the leadership team of the CTA to discuss our work on the impact of trauma, abuse and neglect on the developing child and our work with similar community transformation projects which recognize the key role of early childhood in community and cultural health including KidZone in Philadelphia and the Family Wellness Initiative of the Norlien Foundation in Calgary.

The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: International Impact

When Dr. Perry and Maiz Szalavitz decided to write their recently released book, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog," a major goal was to educate the public about the impact of adverse childhood experiences on children, and, thereby, community and culture. Even prior to release, interest in this book came from other countries. We are pleased that the book will be available in more than a dozen countries and in several different languages.

We truly appreciate the postiive feedback that has come from readers. We have heard from professionals in all disciplines, politicians, journalists and parents.
