In this issue
  • The CTA's Live Web-training
  • New Support for Training and Education
  • The CTA Institutes

  • In this newsletter we will share the progress in some of our ongoing projects; exporting a neurbiologically informed therapeutic approach, the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics; creation of our CTA Institutes for advanced training; and developing a new set of DVD training materials to support educators and clinicians working with at-risk children.

We continue to improve and revise our web-based resources including our new website, www.Chi ldTraumaAcademy.org. We will continue to use www.ChildTrauma.org site but with time, we will be transitioning our new content to the new, more user-friendly site.

As always, we appreciate the positive - and not-so- positive constructive feedback we receive from from our previous Newsletters. We look forward to your comments on this Newsletter. We will continue to work hard to provide useful and timely information to help you continue to better understand and serve high risk children and their families.

    The CTA's Live Web-training

The CTA has been offering a live online training series this fall. This has been a very rewarding and interesting experience. Clinical cases from the various participating organizations are discussed from a neurobiologically-informed, developmentally- respectful interdisciplinary clinical approach used by the CTA.

These weekly training sessions use a web-based audioconference model. This allows individuals to log into the training site and call a conference call number and participate wherever they are. This inexpensive alternative to onsite training or video conference allows institutions and individuals to build capacity and meet training requirements. CEUs are available for qualifying participants.

The upcoming Winter Series is open to individuals and institutions seeking to learn more about clinical work with maltreated and traumatized children. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, a new book by Dr. Perry and Maia Szalavitz will be in book stores within weeks. The reviews continue to be very positive - O, Oprah's magazine, says, "A profound lesson in simple humanity." Written for a general readership, the stories provide a compelling framework to teach readers about the brain, developmental trauma and how a neurodevelopmentally-informed clinical approach can help maltreated and traumatized children.

We have just finished taping two days of material for a new interactive training DVD. This multi-use DVD will allow users to either view the seven thirty minute lessons or search within the multi-set series and play individual video clips to complement live classes. Print materials and complementing slides will be available as well. Watch the website and future Newsletters for updates. We are on schedule to be able to release this DVD series in early Spring of 2007!

For the last five years, the CTA has been providing online courses on our online University, www.C hildTraumaAcademy.com. These classes are completely free for participants. If certification or CEUs are desired, a small administrative fee is charged. The feedback on these Web-courses is very positive. CASA workers, foster parents, judges, teachers, clinicians and a host of other professionals have found these courses very helpful.

The ChildTrauma Academy and its fellows, including Dr. Perry, have been been guest faculty in hundreds of trainings and conferences over the years. These trainings have been developed and delivered by a number of host institutions and organizational sponsors. Despite these opportunities, the CTA realizes that there is a need for more in depth training opportunities with the unique interdisciplinary, neurodevelopmental perspective that characterizes the clinical work and research of the CTA. To meet this need, the CTA will be creating CTA Institutes with partner organizations.

The Denver Children's Advocacy Center and Denver Children's Home are joining with The ChildTrauma Academy to create a CTA Institute which will join the collective strengths of our three organizations to focus on providing high-quality, in depth training in various aspects of clinical work with traumatized and maltreated children. Specialized tracks for social workers, educators, therapists, law enforcement and early childhood educators will be developed. Advanced, multi-day training with onsite clinical experiences will be developed to expand the conventional didactic approach to training. Watch future newsletters for more details about the CTA Institutes.
