Debriefings and Secondary Traumatic Stress
TrainingsSecondary traumatic stress is a risk we incur when we
engage empathically with an adult or child who has been traumatized.
Researcher and practitioners have now acknowledged that persons who work
with or help traumatized persons are indirectly or secondarily at risk of
developing the same symptoms as persons directly affected by trauma.
Clinicians and parents who listen to their clients or children describe the
trauma are at risk of absorbing a portion of the trauma.
For nearly 10 years ChildTrauma Academy staff have
provided Critical Incident Stress
Debriefings for state of Texas child protective services staff who
have experienced the death or serious injury to a child on their caseload or
some other traumatic event that effects their ability to do their job. CTA
staff have also provided Secondary Trauma
Training to educate child protective services staff on how they
themselves may internalize some of the trauma experienced by the children
and families with whom they work.
The ChildTrauma Academy
is proud to begin to offer Debriefings, as
well as Secondary Trauma Trainings, to others who experience
Secondary Trauma
within their work
setting. CTA staff will work to provide debriefings conducted at your place
of business within only a few days of the incident. Secondary Trauma
trainings can also be scheduled for your staff.
These services are appropriate for teachers, caseworkers,
police officers, fire fighters, EMS workers, judges, pediatricians, child
mental health professionals, foster parents, and anyone else who works with
at-risk children and families in crisis.
